About us

North Hamarsland organic sheepNorth Hamarsland has an area of 41 hectares. Of this 3 ha can be classified as improved permanent grassland, and the remainder is rough heather hill. There is a small cultivated plot for vegetables. There are a number of small areas planted up with trees.

The croftland had never received artificial fertilisers or pesticides prior to its purchase in 1977, and has been run on 'organic' lines since. Registered with Scottish Organic Producers Association (membership number 579), the holding attained full organic status in October 2002.

The flock of 25 pure native Shetland ewes spend most of the time on the hill, but are brought in-by for lambing, and following the cutting of hay and baling of silage. The ewes are tupped in early December, when a pure Shetland scrapie tested ram is hired in.

There are two small polytunnels used in conjunction with the garden plot for vegetables, from which salad leaves and herbs are produced for sale at Scoop Wholefoods shop in Lerwick.
